2018 Colour of the Year Predictions
With just a month to go until Pantone reveal their 2018 Colour of the Year, the excitement is mounting. In 2016 we embraced the colours Rose Quartz and Serenity. This year Pantone’s Greenery is everywhere in the design world. With a knack to resonate with how society is feeling and the colours we will be drawn to, the Pantone Colour of the year is always a trend setter.
While we wait to see what Pantone has in store, many paint companies have already launched their own 2018 Colour of the Year. It’s interesting to see how the Colour experts differ in opinion with colours ranging from dramatic energizing red to calming blue. Take a look at some of the colours named to date.
Benjamin Moore – Caliente
The brightest 2018 Colour of the Year so far is Benjamin Moore’s, strong, radiant and full of energy Caliente. Based on researching colour trends at trade fairs, fashion shows and popular culture, the colour team said the spirited personality of red turns heads signalling surprise and adventure. This is a great choice as red is also the complementary colour to Green. After a year where green was seen everywhere, some of us will be drawn to the opposite and complementary red for balance. But is this bright, energizing and dramatic colour too bold in the current testosterone filled climate?
PPG Paints – Black Flame
One of the first to release their colour prediction for 2018 was PPG Paints. Black Flame a statement black with deep tones of indigo was chosen due to it’s strength and privacy. The colour team refers to blacks unique ability to take away weakness in a space and make it stronger. They also highlight the growing desire for privacy in a world where there is pressure to over share on social media, these desires influences our colour choices. I know of a lot of designers who will love this one.
Kansai Paints – Amadeus
A 2018 neutral of the year was named by Kansai Paints in August. Working together with WGSN a soft golden yellow called Amadeus was chosen due to it’s grounding energy. The beauty of yellow is that it is uplifting, comforting and hopeful.
Dulux – Pictured Rocks
Identifying a need for homes to feel even more nurturing in these uncertain times, Dulux chose a gentle pink tone called Pictured Rocks also called Heartwood by parent company AkzoNobel. The colour can be used in a variety of colour combinations, allowing you to create the mood you want in your home be it relaxing or energising.
Behr – In the moment
In the moment, a tranquil blue-grey-green inspired by nature is soothing and restorative, encouraging us to escape from the digital world and embrace mindful unplugged living. In the Moment is a versatile colour that can be used in traditional, modern and coastal decor.
Sherwin Williams – Oceanside
Inspired by travel and people’s sense of adventure. Oceanside is a lively jewel-toned deep blue-green shade. Recommended to “boost creative thinking and clarity of thought in the home office, or invite meditation and introspection into a bedroom or reading nook.”
While these are some of the colours the paint industry are predicting for 2018, colours not mentioned here but are good contenders include: –
Purple tones
Pantone recently released their NYFW Spring 2018 Colour Trend report which included a couple of Purple tints and shades. The creativity and spirituality of purple makes it a good contender 2018.
Orange
From peach to terracotta – tints and shades of orange have been coming through strongly in décor and fashion. Orange is a happy colour, it’s creative and sociable, great qualities by a colour that is often underrated.
White
There is also a strong desire for peace and serenity, so a soft white would be welcome. A clean slate and some peace and quiet is something a lot of us could do with right now. But then again white is a classic and never goes out of fashion.
The varied predictions go to show, when it comes to colour, we need a balance of all colours to lead a happy healthy life. We will all lean toward a Colour we need in 2018 and that’s a good thing.
