Mossel Bay in the Western Cape is a popular tourist destination situated on the shores of the Indian Ocean about half way between between Cape Town (in the Western Cape) and Port Elizabeth in the (Eastern Cape). It is steeped in history going back 164 000 years but more more recently- the early 20th century – fishing and farming were the main activities of this town, its commercial harbour is the smallest in the Transnet Port Authority’s stable of South African Harbours. In 1969 the discovery of  natural offshore gas fields led to the development of the gas-to-liquids refinery operated by PetroSA.

I visited Mossel Bay recently and it was clear to me why tourism is flourishing in this town. The natural beauty, synonymous with the Garden Route, is evident from the moment you catch glimpses of it on the journey from George airport. The climate is mild, with beach-going weather throughout the year. Locals brag about it being the second most temperate climate in the world next to Hawaii. I stayed at the popular Santos Beach. From my hotel room, the view was breathtaking and I could sit for hours on the balcony watching the fishing boats departing and returning to the harbour. Huge cruise ships also anchor here but are transported to shore by boat.

Point Village

I took a short drive from where I was staying to the Point (the tip of the Peninsula), home to the quaint Point Village where I was welcomed by the colourful Point Village Hotel overlooking the bay. After having a delicious light lunch at Delfino’s on the beach I took stroll along the streets of Point Village and was blown away by the beautiful colourful beach cottages.

The scenery is spectacular, as is the fauna and flora and it is clear to see that this has provided the inspiration for the exterior colours in the village.

The point is a popular spot for surfers. It is also home to two tidal pools, the smallest of them is shown here.  Rocky reefs have formed a much larger natural tidal pool called Die Poort situated a bit further around the point, in front of the Point Hotel.

Taking a walk on the beachfront you come across the most delightful colourful beach cottages, like little gems of Mossel Bay. The cottages, once belonging to fishermen, have been revamped and modernized by the new owners. Most of them have kept the charming fisherman style which comes to life with the beautiful use of pastel colours.

In my next post I will give you a sneak peak into one of these charming beach cottages.

I stayed a short drive away from the Point at Santos Beach in a beautiful Airbnb called Bed by the Bay.  I could walk across the road to the swimming beach, the harbour and some lovely restaurants. This was my incredible view of the sunrise.
